Instructions for taking the CTI Exam

WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER TAKING THE EXAM?

  • Certified Technical Investigators (CTI’s) will have demonstrated basic knowledge in audio, video, electronics, tracking, and telephony. The technical community regards this knowledge as essential in today’s challenging law enforcement environment.
  • The CTI guidelines and Reference Manual shows the employer what skill sets are needed to become a Certified Technical Investigator or at least what they will be exposed to.
  • A standard level of skills and expectations needed to do your job. These have been tested and have been successfully passed if the person is a NATIA CTI.
  • Recognition as a Certified Professional by your peers, your employers, and the court (Expert Witness).
  • Taking the training or having the experience needed to challenge the CTI test exposes the student to all the aspects of our industry and puts us all at an even starting point.
  • When working with other agencies, any or all certified Technical Investigators will know they are working with a person of similar knowledge and exposure and an immediate trust is developed.
  • It is an asset to list on your resume.
  • It has been reported that there have been cases where it benefited the member’s salary.
  • Some agencies are now requiring their staff to become NATIA CTI’s.

How to Register

Instructions for taking the CTI exam at NATIA

Qualifications / Eligibility
Applicants must review the CTI Program document for complete information and requirements. All NATIA members are eligible to take the exam. To access this document, log in to the NATIA website; click on the RESOURCES tab; click on CTI DOCUMENTS; then click on the CTI Program document.
Registration & Payment

Applicants must be officially registered for the exam and have the $150 exam fee paid prior to the testing date. All registrations and payments must be completed online or at the conference registration desk.

Verification of Technical Field Experience Form

If you have been a NATIA member for less than five years, you must have your agency complete this form. You may download the form now from the NATIA website here, have your agency complete it, and bring it to the testing site.  Or, you may have your agency complete it and email it to certification@natia.imcsaratoga.com. This form does not have to be completed before taking the exam; however, a certificate will not be issued until this form is received. To download the form, log in to the NATIA website; click on the RESOURCES tab; and click on CTI DOCUMENTS.

Membership

Applicants must be current, active members with membership dues paid through 2025.

Free CTI Exam Certificate?

You must submit the original certificate at the registration desk when you first check in at NATIA 2026 and they will adjust your account accordingly.

Issuance of Certificate

Certificates will be mailed out after the conclusion of the conference to all applicants that pass the exam and complete all required items.  If you are from outside the U.S., please ask at the testing site about getting your certificate before the conclusion of the conference.
